Brill and Publishing Technology celebrate launch of Brill Online

- Longstanding partnership yields strategic new e-resource of aggregated content -

Oxford, 17 May 2012 – Publishing Technology, the largest provider of software and services to the publishing industry, along with Dutch publisher and long-term partner BRILL, announce the launch of the new aggregated scholarly portal, Brill Online Books and Journals.

For the first time, all of Brill’s content from 20 subject specialities across three imprints (BRILL, Global Oriental and Martinus Nijhoff Publishers) is integrated within a single resource.  At launch, the site includes 175 journals and 2,400 e-books, equating to over 150,000 distinct articles and chapters. The new platform is designed with a semantic architecture providing students, researchers and teachers with an enhanced user experience through enriched content and increased discoverability.

Transitioning much of its content from Publishing Technology’s ingentaconnect solution, Brill has moved to a custom pub2web platform to consolidate content assets previously distributed across multiple resources.  The publisher now commands an agile and adaptable site ensuring long-term cost efficiency and a solid and flexible base for future innovation and experimentation.

Brill Online Books and Journals now features;

• search and browse of content by title, type, subject or imprint
• preservation of individual imprint catalogues and brand
• faceted search and browse functionality, facilitating greater discoverability
• usability enhancements such as the introduction of auto-suggestions within search
• ability to create new categories of collections across both journals and e-books
• promotional features for generating content recommendations to libraries
• integration with back-end enterprise systems, for consolidated production workflow

The IET addresses the growing field of biometric recognition in its new journal

2 May 2012 - The Institution of Engineering and Technology, one of the world’s leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community, announces the launch of its latest journal, IET Biometrics. Joining the IET’s extensive portfolio of research journals, IET Biometrics explores developments in the growing field of biometric recognition and technology, enhancing the breadth of information available to the research community. Its broad scope will make it a valuable reference for both industry and academia.

SAGE launches Social Science Bites: interviews with leading social scientists on topics that matter.

 

London, UK (2^nd May 2012) – SAGE, the world’s leading independent academic and professional publisher, today announced the launch of a new podcast: Social Science Bites, a series of interviews with leading social scientists on different aspects of the social world.

The series is produced and presented by well known authors Nigel Warburton (Senior Lecturer in Philosophy, The Open University) and David Edmonds (Senior Research Associate at the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics) following the enormous success of their existing podcast series, Philosophy Bites, which has had more than 13 million downloads.

Danny Dorling: Current inequality in the rich world is at the highest it has been since the 1920s. Hear Danny Dorling discussing the “staggering” disparity between rich and poor which has become a defining measure of our times. How did it happen? Why does it matter? And is it sustainable?

Rom Harré: “Everybody lives in a society...They want to know what it is they’re living in,” says Rom Harré in this exploration of the nature of the social sciences. How do they differ from the physical sciences? What challenges do they face? What is their value?

Richard Sennett: Co-operation is working with people to do things you can’t do yourself. How can you co-operate with people who don’t share your values? According to Richard Sennett, such co-operation is a craft that needs to be learnt.

Editor biographies:

David Edmonds is a Senior Research Associate at the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics.  He is also a radio documentary maker for the BBC World Service: he has made programmes in over 60 countries, and has won many awards.  He is the author or co-author of several books which have been translated into 25 languages.  They include, with John Eidinow, the international bestseller Wittgenstein's Poker (short-listed for the Guardian First Book Award, Bobby Fischer Goes To War (long-listed for the Samuel Johnson prize) and Rousseau's Dog.  With Nigel Warburton he co-runs Philosophy Bites (www.philosophybites.com), the popular philosophy podcast which has had 13 million downloads.  David studied for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at Oxford and has a PhD in philosophy from the Open University.  He is a Contributing Editor for Prospect Magazine. He has held fellowships from the University of Chicago and the University of Michigan. 

Nigel Warburton is Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the Open University, an honorary associate research fellow at the Institute of Philosophy (London University), and Senior Research Associate at the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics. He was recently described in The Observer as 'one of the most-read popular philosophers of our time'. He is  the main interviewer for the Philosophy Bites podcast (www.philosophybites.com) which he makes with David Edmonds. IET strengthens publications with acquisition of SciTech book list

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), Europe’s largest engineering society, has acquired the full publication list of renowned US electromagnetics engineering specialist, SciTech Publishing of Raleigh, NC. The acquisition of more than 70 backlist engineering titles, with an additional output of 15 new titles per year, complements the IET’s existing portfolio of 300 books and e-books.

The move is part of the IET’s continuing strategy to grow its academic publishing division through the acquisition of titles, as well as through the organic growth of its international readership. The acquisition expands and strengthens the IET’s existing essential engineering product range, including its comprehensive Inspec database of quality research abstracts and its journals and magazines, available to a global audience.

Highly valued by engineering practitioners, SciTech’s list includes the best-selling radar references ‘Introduction to Airborne Radar, 2^nd Edition’ by George W. Stimson and ‘Principles of Modern Radar: Basic Principles’ by Mark A. Richards et al, as well as advanced textbooks and references in antennas, microwaves/RF and electromagnetics theory.
