H5N1 research: biosafety, biosecurity and bioethics, 3-4 April 2012, London, UK

An international scientific meeting to discuss the practice and policy of H5N1 research, with a programme of talks and discussions organised by Professor John Skehel FRS and Professor Simon Wain-Hobson.

The journals Nature and Science have recently received papers from two teams of researchers showing that the H5N1 virus could mutate into a form that could spread rapidly among a human population. Various national and international bodies have expressed concern that the safety and security of both the research worker and wider society needs to be considered before work of this kind is published in full. Set against this is the basic principle of openness in science: scientists should operate openly and publish their findings. This conference will discuss virus research, and the safety, security, and ethical aspects from the perspectives of researchers, publishers, policymakers and funders.

"Thanks to my receipt of a SAGE travel grant, I was able to attend the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers' (ALPSP) International Conference. The conference was held from September 14th through 16th at the beautiful Heythrop Park Hotel in Oxfordshire and was attended by a broad spectrum of professionals engaged in issues and challenges associated with the publication and dissemination of knowledge.

"In my current position as Head of Electronic & Continuing Resources Acquisitions at East Carolina University's Joyner Library, I work with publishers on a daily basis on acquisition and licensing terms. For this reason, attending the ALPSP conference was particularly insightful: it enabled me to see familiar topics in the field of librarianship (like evolving formats, patron preferences, acquisition models, and discovery tools) being addressed from a publisher-centered perspective.

In the current environment of tightening budgets, libraries and publishers are both being faced with the challenges of doing more with less. To successfully partner to address these challenges, it is essential that both parties strive to understand the other's perspective. New to ALPSP - Arrk Ltd

IET Journals welcomes two new Editors-in-Chief

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Professor James Lam of Hong Kong University as the Editor-in-Chief of the IET Control Theory & Applications and Professor Majid Mirmehdi, University of Bristol, as the Editor-in-Chief of the IET Computer Vision.

Prior to joining the University of Hong Kong in 1993, Professor Lam was lecturer at the City University of Hong Kong and the University of Melbourne. His research interests include model reduction, robust control and filtering of dynamic systems, networked control systems, vibration control, and biological networks.

A key objective for Professor Lam will be to continue development of the IET Control Theory & Applications as a key international journal, and a platform for promotion and dissemination of forefront knowledge and high-quality scholarly research pertinent to control systems, especially in the new and emerging research areas.

Professor Mirmehdi is currently a Professor of Computer Vision at the University of Bristol, and his areas of interest include natural scene analysis and medical imaging.

Professor Mirmehdi’s principle aim is to increase the standing and visibility of the IET Computer Vision journal in the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition community. He will work closely with the Editorial Board and publishing team to further develop the journal.

Kruna Vukmirovic, Journal Development Editor at the IET, said: “We are excited to have Professor Lam and Professor Mirmehdi at the helm of the IET Control Theory & Applications and the IET Computer Vision, respectively. I look forward to working with them as we develop these journals and strengthen our commitment to publication and dissemination of high-quality research.”
